Five Fingers

Created through the handcrafting of LCD screens, Five Fingers explores the materiality of the digital image and challenges the notion of immateriality often attributed to it.

The moment when an image becomes an image and ceases to be merely a medium—such as paint, graphite or charcoal—has historically been an enigma. In the contemporary world, it is the digital image that is shrouded in this mystery.

Inspired by the relationship between the fabric and the screen’s electrical design, Five Fingers comprises five metres of flexible electronic circuit and dozens of pixels on which data is displayed in the form of shifting, dynamic patterns. The electrical organisation, depth and materiality of the LCD screen are explored to gain a deeper understanding of the physical origin of the digital image. The sculpture takes its name from the writings of James Joyce, in which he questions the threshold between the visible and the tangible.
